FROM THE SIGNAL ITEM - June 17, 1998: First Library Golf Tournament Library golf benefit plans on course BY SONJA_BROBECK Staff Writer As time draws near for the First Annual Andrew Carnegie Free Library Golf Tournament, everything seems to be coming together smoothly. The event is the brainchild of Doug Dombroski a life trustee at the library. He was kicking around fund raising ideas with Carnegie businessman John Nolte when the idea for a golf tournament struck him. Nolte was later instituted as the library board's treasurer and has been working with Dombroski, members of the library's board, Advisory Board and the Chartiers Valley Partnership to make the event a success. The event is scheduled for Monday, June 29, at the Chartiers Country Club. The shotgun start is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. and the awards dinner complete with prizes and raffles will start at 7 p.m. While response of golfers is promising, Nolte says he feels the annual event will continue to grow as years pass. "The people are given a day of fun," says Nolte. "And it's a write off." Nolte is trying to target business owners into using the tournament as a way to entertain clients in their own backyard while being able to use a portion of it as a tax deduction. Sponsors are still needed for the tournament. An event co-sponsorhip is $1,000; greens sponsorship, $200; tee sponsorship, $200 and prize sponsorship, $50. A golf for four and with hole sponsorship package runs $750, while golfing for one and dinner is $175. For those who don't enjoy "chasing a little ball around," the dinner only package is $50. Automobiles have been donated by Woltz and Wind Ford and Batey Chevrolet in the event a golfer is lucky enough to get a hole in one. Other skill prizes include a set of clubs, wedges and interestingly enough a bucket of new golf balls. Each golfer is required to bring three new golf balls to the tournament. At a particular hole, each golfer will be asked to place one ball into a bucket and the golfer who gets the shortest pin distance wins them.
