The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Institute were dedicated on November 5, 1895. The following is Andrew Carnegie's dedication address, in its entirety, as officially published by the City of Pittsburgh. The page numbers refer to the official booklet published, reporting the dedicatory exercises.

In his address(on page 24, line 23 of the official booklet), Andrew Carnegie publicly announces, for the first time, his intention to build a free public library in Carnegie, Pennsylvania. On May 1, 1901, the Andrew Carnegie Free Library opened to the public.
