The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh
Prepared Statement *** Large-Print Version

Public Statement [Impromptu] - 2004 November 1:
Statement of Glenn A. Walsh before Pittsburgh City Council,
Regarding Proclamation Presented by City Council to
Retiring Carnegie Library Director Herb Elish --
Points Covered in Impromptu Statement:

* Read fourth paragraph from proclamation:
"Whereas, Mr. Elish has directed nearly all of these new funds to upgrading the Main Library and the aging branches, which included the Homewood library which was restored to its original grandeur and reopen one year ago on November 3, 2003,"
* I approved of renovations of the Main Library and Homewood Branch Library.
* Over $4 million spent to renovate first floor of Main Library and over $3 million spent to renovate Homewood Branch, yet no-where-near as much money spent on the small Hazelwood Branch opened earlier this year.
* Large attendance boasted at new Hazelwood Branch will disappear with the opening of the new and larger Squirrel Hill Branch Library next year.
* Two things need to be remembered:
** 1) Hazelwood Branch Library was moved to a small second-floor rental unit, above a deli which sells beer and a laundramat, against the wishes of the majority of residents in the Hazelwood neighborhood.
** 2) The Historic Hazelwood Branch Library building, opened in 1900, continues to sit empty, joining several other empty buildings and vacant lots in Hazelwood. And, this building will remain empty for the forseeable future, due to the deferred maintenance practiced by Carnegie Library which let the building run-down, since they knew they wanted to abandon the building. Few people will be willing to invest the huge amount of money which will be needed to restore the building, due to the fact that it has been allowed to become so run-down.
* The lease on the current Hazelwood Branch Library expires in five years, in 2009. At that time, Carnegie Library should return the branch library to the Historic Hazelwood Branch Library building, by working to fix building problems no later than 2007 or 2008.
